Founded in 1947, Kandalore has long been regarded as one of the leading traditional summer camps in Canada providing the best of both canoe tripping and in-camp activities. The Camp prides itself on its warm and supportive community where children are made to feel included in the camp culture. The supportive nature of the camp allows for the campers to try new activities and develop new skills with the help of caring staff members. Kandalore operates as a summer camp in the summer months and an Outdoor Education Centre hosting school groups from September to June.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Summer Camp Director, the Assistant Director – Program Operations provides year-round leadership for Kandalore’s summer camp program. The role is responsible for program preparation, curriculum and equipment, risk management, staff recruitment and training, program budgets, special programs, and the supervision and support of key summer program leaders.

During the off-season, the Assistant Director – Program Operations prepares Kandalore’s program areas for the upcoming summer, coordinates staff qualifications and training, supports tripping preparation, and contributes to marketing, alumni engagement, and other seasonal initiatives. During the summer, the role provides direct oversight of program leaders and activity areas, supports safe and effective program delivery, and helps ensure that campers and staff experience a well-prepared, high-quality program.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee summer program preparation, including equipment purchasing recommendations, supplier relationships, inventories, program budgets, and activity resources.

• Develop and maintain program-area risk management plans and ensure ongoing risk assessments are completed across activities.

• Review, develop, and update activity lesson plans, curriculum, and program initiatives.

• Support the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, placement, and management of seasonal staff

• Organize summer staff certification and qualification requirements, including training courses, reimbursement processes, and qualification records.

• Plan and facilitate Senior Staff Training Week and Staff Training Week in collaboration with other Directors.

•Work with program leaders to ensure activity programming, equipment, supplies, records, and camper progression materials are prepared and maintained throughout the summer.

• Support program safety by monitoring activity areas and helping organize and oversee emergency procedures.

• Support the development and delivery of special events and seasonal programs, including Winter Family Camp.

• Contribute to post-summer review and follow-up, including camper and parent survey debriefs and program-related camper issues.

• Support marketing and community engagement initiatives, including camp promotion, information events, reunions, and alumni engagement.

• Manage the summer arrival and departure process in Toronto and participate in Director and Senior Staff meetings.

What You Bring

• Demonstrated experience leading camp, recreation, outdoor education, or youth programming with certifications: NL, SFA, and Ropes Level 1 an asset.

• Experience supervising seasonal staff and supporting hiring, training, coaching, and performance management.

• Strong program planning and curriculum-development skills, with a focus on safe, engaging, and age-appropriate programming.

• Experience with risk management, emergency procedures, and operational safety in an active program environment.

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage budgets, purchasing, inventories, schedules, and competing priorities.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, suppliers, families, and cross-functional teams.

• Comfort working with camp management databases and maintaining accurate staff and camper program records; CampBrain experience is an asset.

• Ability to work from Kandalore’s Toronto office during the off-season and live/work at Camp Kandalore during the summer season.

Job Outline

Kandalore is currently seeking enthusiastic applicants to join our Outdoor Education Centre team this Winter!

Outdoor education facilitators are responsible for supervising, instructing, and facilitating groups of 8 – 12 students from grade 5 to 12 through a variety of outdoor activities. The program focuses on small group initiative challenges, cooperation and problem solving, leadership, and teamwork development. These aims are emphasized throughout visiting students’ overnight outdoor education experience and in activities such as canoeing, low ropes, rock climbing, biking and other outdoor activities. Candidates should be able to adapt their teaching styles to the different and unique characteristics of each group and program. Work also includes opportunities for program development and assisting with site maintenance. Experience with leading groups, teaching, or outdoor education is an asset.

The job is ideal for candidates who plan to pursue outdoor education or teaching children on a long-term basis and can use the opportunity to broaden their skills and experience. • ORCKA 3,4 or Camp Canoeing Instructor Certification
